Taking the plunge

Two months ago I was a Marketing Manager for a small Education company. I had been there for three years and loved the people I worked with. However I was unsatisfied job-wise and felt I was yet to find my calling. I had always had an affinity with animals and had spent most of my early 20s dreaming of running away to work in an elephant sanctuary in South Africa, or become a safari guide in Kenya (a girl can dream).  When I returned to reality, I thought more practically about my love of an animal much closer to home – the dog.

Making the decision to quit my job and train as a dog groomer was not an easy one. Saying goodbye to a regular wage to enter an area that I had little experience in seemed a daunting prospect.  I had been umming and ahhing for some time until one day when I decided I had had enough, and I handed in my notice (very scary). I think you get to the point when you realise that life is too short not to be doing something you love and for the first time in ages I felt excited by the challenges ahead.

Few of us are fortunate enough to do something we truly love for a living, and perhaps it’s too soon for me to truly say if I have found my calling. What I do know is that I have no regrets at leaving my job and am excited at the thought of setting up my own dog grooming company, all the challenges that come with it, and working everyday with (wo)man’s best friend.
